"... the Academy shall, whenever called upon by any department of the Government, investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art ..." With these words, Congress established the National Academy of Sciences in 1863. Ever since that time, the National Academy of Sciences through it's various branches, has been performing research on just about any subject. One of the areas which has been studied is animal nutrition and in particular nutrition for horses. To this day, horses have remained an important part of the American economy as well as the world's; therefore, the care and feeding of horses is of utmost importance. In order for our horses to perform at their peak, they must be fed a balanced diet, one that meets not only their caloric requirements, but also provides all other nutrients, in balance. This web page has been developed to aid horsemen in developing a balanced diet for their horses. The information presented here has been derived from the National Research Council recommendations for a horses daily nutritional requirements. It is highly recommended that you purchase NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF HORSES Fifth Revised Edition, 1989; National Research Council; National Academy Press; ISBN 0-309--03989-4. One should also consult with an equine nutritionist to handle any nutrition problems. It should be noted that since this project was started, the Sixth Revised Edition, 2007 has been published. This site will continue to support both editions of this publication. Fifth Revised Edition, 1987The calculators presented in this section are a work in progress. The Nutrient Requirements Calculator is fairly complete. The Composition of Feeds needs to be completed. As I find time to gather more information about various feed, this information will be expanded. Eventually, there will be another calculator created that will take the results of the Daily Nutritional Requirements Calculator and allow you select various feeds and create a balanced diet for your horse. The following calculator is based on the Fifth Revised Edition of NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF HORSES. The calculator is complete; however, I have not gotten it integrated with Compositions of Feed so that a complete balanced diet can be computed. This calculator will tell you what nutrients are required so you can then figure out what to feed. Calculators
Sixth Revised Edition, 2007The following calculator is based on the Sixth Revised Edition of NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF HORSES. The calculator is very complete; however, not very friendly to use, unless you are comfortable working with metric units. Also, the work flow is a bit ambiguous. The calculator comes from the NRC.
